Namtso Lake (sky-lake) and is located in the wide grasslands a few hours drive north of Lhasa. It is the largest freshwater lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region and lies more than 4,000 meters above sea level.
To the south of the lake is the massive snow mountain, Nyenchen Thanglha, the sacred abode of an important protector god by the same name. The lake is considered to the residence of his partner, the goddess Dorje Kondrakma ?? both of them were appointed as Dharma protectors by Gurn Rimpoche, the master Padmasabhava.
There are many caves and small monasteries on the peninsula called Tashido in which many masters and yogis practice meditation. Pilgrims come to circumambulate this holy site, and on the lunar sheep year tens of thousands of pilgrims will gather for pilgrimage around the entire lake, which takes more than two weeks.
It is believed that just by being in this holy place is bliss in itself and offering prayers here is an especially effective way to purify ourselves of all sins and strengthen our innate power.
